One of the first uses of train number indicators in Germany was in Braunschweig. The indicators are tremendously useful for showing where trains are located.

There are limitations, however. Not every main signal has an train number indicator. The numbers jump to the next indicator when a signal drops to “stop”.

This means:
* If you revoke a route without putting the signal to “stop” the number gets transported to the next box as an error number of the form Fxxxxx where xxxxx is an incremented number. Use the HaGT button to first put the signal to stop before revoking.
* Setting a shunt route from a track with an indicator to a signal without an indicator, the number does not get transported. The system does not know what to do with the number!
* If you set a train route to a subsidiary signal, the train number is not transported. The system cannot see where the train will go behind the signal.

==To enter a train number==
In the Group Button window there is a numeric keypad. Here you may enter a train’s steering number followed by its train number. The steering number is always pressed first, and is used to automatically route the train where possible. Subsequent digits are interpreted as train number digits.

For example, for a train with a steering number of 1, and a train number of 4711, enter 14711 and the train number indicator will temporarily be populated with that value.

==Getting the number on the panel==
To get the number into the panel (and thereby, the interlocking system) press the black button above and to the left of the number, together with the button on the panel next to where you want to place the number.

==Clearing a train number from the panel==
Clearing the number is done using the * key. To clear a number on the panel itself, first ensure the train number indicator in the Group Button window is empty. Then transport the “empty number” to the panel as though it were any other number.
