Dispatching in Sechtem

Before you get your approval to run the service on a signal box, you need to find out about the local characteristics. After training as a general trainee signalman, dispatchers were always paired with a person skilled in the signal box. This chapter is the brief introduction to the area. Read it carefully. It contains very important information.

The text is "peer to peer" written as if you are in the signal box, the first day after training.

Signal Box Sechtem


The signal box of Sechtem is located along the electrified double-track main line 'Linke Rheinstrecke', line number 2630 from Cologne to Mainz between the stations of Roisdorf and Brühl.

Neighbouring Dispatching Areas

On the top right (track 041/042) are the connecting tracks towards the dispatching area of Roisdorf (KROI). Wrong line operation (Gleiswechselbetrieb or GWB) towards and from Roisdorf is possible.

On the top left (track 001/30) the 'Linke Rheinstrecke' will leave our dispatching area to the North towards Brühl. The station of Brühl (KBR) is the next controlled location in this direction. Wrong line operation towards and from Brühl is also possible here.



Normally we have Sechtem running in Sellbstbetrieb (auto fleeting) as all traffic goes via track 1 for trains from Brühl towards Roisdorf (and onwards to Bonn Hbf), and via track 2 for traffic from Roisdorf towards Brühl (and onwards to Köln).

There is an outer platform along track 1. An island platform is located between tracks 2 and 3.

The SE 3500 and RB 7300 series are the only services which stop in Sechtem.

There is no platform along track 6. This track is used for overtaking trains only. There are no planned train stops at track 3. A train need to go there only when the train is coming out of GWB from Brühl.

On the line towards Bonn Hbf we have four level crossings (km 17.140, 18.790, 20.100 and 22.035) with full barriers. If a route has been set and the barriers have closed, we need to confirm that the level crossing is free of other traffic. You will hear a bell ringing as long as the barriers are closing. Secure the level crossing with the BüFT group button and the yellow dotted button of the level crossing. (* this is an expert option)

Bi-directional running (GWB)

Bi-directional running, in German called Gleiswechselbetrieb (GWB), is actually left hand running instead of the usual right hand running on the open line. The infrastructure is equipped with automatic block(s) which can be used into both directions. GWB is possible between both Brühl and Sechtem, as well as between Sechtem and Roisdorf . However, GWB has its limitations because from the GWB cannot be reached from all tracks, and not tracks can be reached from GWB.

The following tracks can not be accessed from within GWB:

Exit routes from tracks into GWB are not possible for:

We have direction controls on the open lines towards the neighbouring areas. This means that you need to use the EaGT button to set the direction of the automatic blocks towards you. Of course, you must offer a train to Roisdorf or Brühl prior to sending trains into GWB.
