Before you get your approval to run the service on a signal box, you need to find out about the local characteristics. After training as a general trainee signalman, dispatchers were always paired with a person skilled in the signal box. This chapter is the brief introduction to the area. Read it carefully. It contains very important information.

The text is "peer to peer" written as if you are in the signal box, the first day after training.

Have a more detailed look at the Sp Dr S 60-Zentralstellwerk Heidelberg Hbf panel here.

Zentralstellwerk Heidelberg Hbf

Lines

We have a total of 3 lines in the dispatching area of our Power Signal Box (PSB). Those are:

  • Line 4000 (Rheintalbahn Mannheim – Heidelberg - Basel)
  • Line 4100 (Neckartalbahn Heidelberg – Altstadt)
  • Line 3601 (Main-Neckar-Bahn Frankfurt – Darmstadt - Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld - Heidelberg-Wieblingen)

Neighbouring Dispatching Areas

Let's have a look at our neighbouring dispatchers: :

On the left hand side, in the blue part of the panel (Western side):

  • Mannheim Hbf (Tracks 955/958)
  • Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld (Tracks 853/856)
  • Mannheim Rbf (Tracks 553/558)

On the right hand side of the panel (Eastern side)

  • Neckargemünd (orange part - Tracks 801/802)
  • Wiesloch-Walldorf (green part - Tracks 454/463)

There three entries towards the shunt yard of Heidelberg (Heidelberg Rbf).

Mannheim Hbf (RM)

Tracks 955/958 are the tracks to and from Mannheim Hbf. Our neighbouring dispatcher overthere is dispatcher Mannheim Hbf (M Hbf). Wrong line operation (Gleiswechselbetrieb or GWB) is possible on both tracks.

Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld (RMF)

Tracks 853/856 are the tracks to and from Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld. Our neighbouring dispatcher overthere is dispatcher Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld (Frfld). Wrong line operation is possible on both tracks.

Mannheim Rbf (RMR)

Tracks 553/558 are the tracks to and from Mannheim Rangierbahnhof (Rbf). Our neighbouring dispatcher overthere is dispatcher Mannheim Rbf (M Rbf). Wrong line operation is not possible on those tracks.

Heidelberger Rangierbahnhof (Rbf)

There three entries towards the shunt yard of Heidelberg (Heidelberg Rbf):

  • to/from Mannheim Rbf via tracks 753/764;
  • to/from Neckargemünd via tracks 861/862 ;
  • v Wiesloch-Walldorf via tracks 535/536.

Only track 535 can be used into both directions.

Neckargemünd (RNM)

On top right, in the orange part, we have tracks 801/802 to and from Neckargemünd. Our neighbouring dispatcher overthere is dispatcher Neckargemünd (Neck). Wrong line operation is not possible on those tracks.

Wiesloch-Walldorf (RWS)

On the bottom right, in the green part, we have tracks 553/554 to and from Wiesloch-Walldorf. Our neighbouring dispatcher overthere is dispatcher Wiesloch-Walldorf (WiesW). Wrong line operation is possible on both tracks.

Stations and Sidings

Abzw Heidelberg-Wieblingen (RHWA)

Abzw Heidelberg-Wieblingen

On the left side we have junction (Abzw) Heidelberg-Wieblingen. The tracks to and from Mannheim Hbf (955/958) passover the track from Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld (853), beofre both tracks to and from Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld (853/856) join the line towards Heidelberg. At this junction, traffic from Heidelberg Hbf is being directed in either the direction of Mannheim Hbf or Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld.

The lower two tracks are the tracks to and from Mannheim Rbf (553/558), which only connect to the shunt yard of Heidelberg via tracks 753/764. Trains from Heidelberg Rbf send via track 764 can be routed to the wrong line track towards Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld (853), but normally teh dispatcher of Heidelberg Rbf will send trains for that direction via track 755.

The tracks from Mannheim Hbf do not have a connection to the shunt yard. Only possible destination is Heidelberg Hbf via tracks 754/755.

Tracks 133/134 are the tracks towards the service yard of Heidelberg Hbf (Bbf).

Tracks 381 through 385 are used for stabling trains.

Note that the grey area on the panel is a SpDrS59 system. There are some Peculiarities for such signal box system

Heidelberg Rbf (RHR)

Abzw. Heidelberg Königstuhl (RKGS)

Abzw. Heidelberg Königstuhl

The tracks to and from Heidelberg Rbf (861/862) connect to the line Heidelberg Hbf - Neckargemünd (852/854 and 851/863) at this junction.

Peculiarities

SpDrS 59 Technology

The station of Heidelberg Hbf, so the grey tiles on the panel, is constructed using the Sp Dr S59 interlocking logic, instead of Sp Dr S60. There are some specific differences between Sp Dr S59 and Sp Dr S60.

Main differences are:

  • the main signals of a Sp Dr S59 system do not have a square Route Locked indicator and Overlap route indicator
  • route indicators : along the station tracks three round indicators show the state of the routes being set. The indicator in the middle shows whether a overlap route has been set and locked
  • the round indicator near the signal will be lit if route setting starting at the signal is not possible.
  • Sp Dr S59 does not automatically release the overlap route when the train is occupying the track section in front of the signal for a certain amount of time. Revoking the Overlap route always has to be done manually, either by applying DRGT + FRT + Signal button or FHT + Signal button, depending on the situation.
  • Signals can not be locked individually. The "track locked" indicator (red light below the white track number box) is used instead.
  • Sometimes a train route is not released whilst the train has fully entered the target track, mainly on the station tracks with cover signals in the middle. In those situations, you won't be able to set exit shunt routes when you have only revoked the overlap route. Press FHT plus the signal button of the cover signal to revoke the train route.
