Before you get your approval to run the service on a signal box, you need to find out about the local characteristics. After training as a general trainee signalman, dispatchers were always paired with a person skilled in the signal box. This chapter is the brief introduction to the area. Read it carefully. It contains very important information.

The text is "peer to peer" written as if you are in the signal box, the first day after training.

Stellwerk Gerresheim

The signal box Düsseldorf-Gerresheim encompasses the station of Gerresheim as well as the junctions (Abzweigstellen) Fortuna, Dora und Hochdahl.

The station of Gerresheim is located along the line between Wuppertal and Düsseldorf. Traffic consists of S-Bahn as well as regional services. The regional services are routed to/from Wuppertal via the main line (Fernbahn), which is single track between Gerresheim and Wuppertal (Gruiten). It can become a bit exciting when trains are delayed on this line.

Our PSB is of type Sp Dr S 600, which means that some things, like some Group Buttons are operated differently compared to the Sp Dr S 60 system.

Neighbouring Dispatching Areas

Let's have a look at our neighbouring dispatchers:

Stellwerk Regiobahn

This is the non-electrified double track (operate FfrT !) of line 2423 to/from ettman Stadtwald (KME). This line is owned by Regiobahn. The responsible Fdl is located of the PSB of Regiobahn, operating an electronic dispatching system.

Stellwerk Gf (Bf Gruiten) (KGUI)

Here the double track S-Bahn line 2525 and the single track Fernbahn 2550 leave our dispatching area into the direction of Wuppertal. The first controlled location there is Abzw. Gruiten, controlled by PSB Gruiten. This PSB is remotely controlled from PSB Wuppertal-Vohwinkel (Kwv) but offering trains still has to be done to Gruiten (KGUI).

Stellwerk Rf (Bf Düsseldorf-Rath) (KDR)

This freight line 2421 leads towards Abzweig Hardt (KHAR). This junction is remotely controlled by the dispatcher of Düsseldorf-Rath.

Stellwerk Gf (Bf Düsseldorf-Grafenberg) (KDGR)

This freight line 2422 leads towards Anschluss Grafenberg (Graf).

Stellwerk Df (Düsseldorf Hbf) (KD)

Here the S-Bahn line 2525 continues towards Düsseldorf Hbf (KD).

The upper tracks belong to the Fernbahn (Main line) 2550 towards Düsseldorf Hbf (KD). The lower third track is part of the freight line 2404 towards Abzweig Rethel. Abzweig Rethel is remotely controlled by PSB Düsseldorf (Df). The shunt yard Rbf Derendorf (KDD) can be reached via this line.

Stations and Sidings

Let's have a more detailed look at our stations and sidings:

Hp Hochdahl-Millrath (KHOM)

Hp Hochdahl-Millrath

The stop Hp Hochdahl-Millrath is located along the S-Bahn line 2525 to/from Wuppertal-Vohwinkel (via Gruiten). The stop has an island platform between the two S-Bahn tracks. The single track long-distance line (2550) between Abzw. Gruiten and Düsseldorf-Gerresheim just passes by here, so does not have a platform.

Hochdahl

Abzweigstelle (KHOL)

The remote controlled junction Abzweig Hochdahl is located along the tracks from Gruiten. Here the S-Bahn tracks and Ferngleis connect. As said before, the Fernbahn is single track to/from Wuppertal so in case of malfunctions etc or just when things are getting to busy, trains are diverted over the S-Bahn. At this junction trains can be routed to their normal tracks again.

Even though signalled wrong line operation (signalisierter Falschfahrbetrieb (SFB) ) is not forseen on the S-Bahn track to Gruiten, there is a block signal (402) located near this junction. This is a peculiarity Obwohl kein signalisierter Falschfahrbetrieb (SFB) im S-Bahn Gleis nach Gruiten eingerichtet ist, steht dennoch ein Blocksignal von Gruiten gesehen vor dem Abzweig Hochfeld. Dieses ist eine Besonderheit, es dient(e) ausschließlich der Bedienung der Awanst Rönsch, die sich in direkter Nähe zum Abzweig befindet. Durch das Blocksignal können Sperrfahrten bei der Rückkehr von der Awanst per Signal eingelassen werden, sodass sie ab dort wieder als Zugfahrt verkehren können und den Betrieb so nicht länger aufhalten.

Ausweichanschlussstelle Rönsch (KHOW)

Die Awanst wird über eine Schlüsselweiche erreicht, dort findet aber schon einige Jahre nichts mehr statt, die Gleise sind zugewuchert.

Hp Hochdahl (KHO)

An der S-Bahnstrecke gibt es wieder einen Mittelbahnsteig. Direkt anschließend befindet sich ein Bahnübergang.

Als nächstes folgt der Haltepunkt Erkrath. Auch hier gibt es wieder einen Mittelbahnsteig.

Bf Gerresheim (KDGE)

Hier im Bahnhof Gerresheim gibt es drei Bahnsteiggleise. An Gleis 101 gibt es einen Seitenbahnsteig und zwischen Gleis 102 und 203 gibt es einen Mittelbahnsteig. Wenn ein Zug in Gerresheim am Bahnsteig halten soll, dann MUSS er vom Hbf Düsseldorf (KD) über die S-Bahn kommen, bzw eine Abfahrt vom Bahnsteig Richtung KD ist nur über die S-Bahn möglich. Von Gleis 1 oder 2 kann mann Richtung Wuppertal ebenfalls nur über die S-Bahn fahren, aus Gleis 3 kommt man auch ins Ferngleis Ri. Wuppertal und nach Mettmann Stadtwald (KME). Die S-Bahnen der Linie S 28 kommen aus dem S-Bahn Gleis von Düsseldorf und halten in beiden Richtungen in Gleis 3. Das bedeutet, dass es hier bei Verspätungen schonmal eng werden kann. Die Gleise 103 und 104 sind die Durchfahrgleise der Fernstrecke Richtung KD, es gibt hier keinen Bahnsteig. Nebenan gibt es noch zwei Abstellgleise (105+106). Die ganzen Anschlüsse und Stumpfgleise existieren sozusagen nur noch auf unserem Stelltisch, draussen ist alles zugewachsen und teilweise abgebaut.

Hp Flingern (KDFL)

An der S-Bahn Richtung Düsseldorf Hbf liegt der Haltepunkt Flingern. Auch hier gibt es einen Mittelbahnsteig.

Abzw. Fortuna (KFO)

Dies ist der Abzweig Fortuna. Hier kommt die Gz-Strecke 2421 vom Abzweig Hardt. Außerdem gibt es einen Gleiswechsel, damit Züge von Rethel auf das Regelgleis wechseln können.

Abzw. Dora (KDOA)

Der Abzweig Dora ist nur an das Streckengleis Gerresheim-Hbf angeschlossen. Züge von Rethel verkehren deshalb bis zum Abzweig Fortuna auf dem linken Gleis. Der Anschluss Grafenberg (Strecke 2422) ist nur vom Abzweig Rethel (Strecke 2402) aus zu erreichen. Die Strecke 2403 ist dauerhaft gesperrt (und zum Großteil bereits abgebaut).
