The switch chain mechanism ("laufkette" in German, abbreviated "LK") is a system that staggers the throwing of switches when a route is being set. The purpose of this staggering is to limit the peak load; throwing many switches simultaneously would draw too much electrical current.
The switch chain is disabled using the WSpT button together with the station button. Enabling the mechanism is achieved using the WESpT button together with the station button. Large panels often have more than one switch chain mechanism. These switch chains are grouped geographically, and enabling or disabling them is done using the buttons near the region.
When the switch chain mechanism is disabled, the LK light becomes lit next to the WSpT and WESpT buttons.
